A delightful 500 year old stone house, sleeps 9 in modern comfort, 10 minutes drive from Pezenas (antiques stores, market) and within easy reach of the Mediterranean.
The most architecturally interesting parts of this large stone house date back to the 15th century, late Medieval, early Renaissance. The vaulted ceilings in the living room and a massive fireplace with carved Latin inscription recall an earlier life as the kitchen for an inn or monastery. In World War Two, the same room served as a town bomb shelter (never needed). The house is one block deep. At the rear, the avenue de St-Thibéry provides room for parking. Through the front door, you step immediately onto the tiny rue du Portail ('street of the portal'), which curves through the oldest part of Valros. Our house is part of a row of buildings that follow the old town ramparts.
The house accommodates 9 people on three floors in large comfortable rooms. On the ground floor there is a dining room, with exposed stone walls and beams, a remodelled kitchen, with fridge/freezer, cooker, and washing machine; and a very large living room with vaulted stone ceilings, and an immense working fireplace - the room is furnished with lots of comfortable seating and is well lighted for reading. Outside there is an open two level area for alfresco dining and relaxing.
On the first floor there are four bedrooms: 2 double bedrooms, 1 single bedroom, and a bedroom with 2 single beds with en-suite bathroom with shower and WC. There is also a seperate bathroom with shower and WC.
On the top floor there is a bedroom with queen sized bed, as well as a large and very private terrace.

A kitchen already stocked with necessities like salt and pepper (in many rentals the cupboard¹s bare when you arrive) and well equipped with pots, pans, dishes and utensils. A telephone for free local calls. Bicycles are available as are board games.

The house is 30 seconds walk from the boulangerie and two minutes walk from the village square with its café.
Valros is an attractive village with a 13th century church, and several narrow, twisting streets. There is a pretty central square shaded by plane trees, where you will find the bar and a public telephone. There are in the village a tobacconist\'s, a butcher\'s which offers take-away meals, and two bakers\' - one almost next-door to the house! A local producer sells his fruit and vegetables in the square every morning, and there are a number of travelling shops which call regularly, including a fishmonger, an oyster and mussel stall and a butcher/charcuterie. Pezenas, the nearest town, boasts a lively Saturday market, two supermarkets, banks, bars and restaurants. The Auberge de La Tour, in Valros, has an excellent reputation for its cuisine. There is, of course, a Cave Co-operative selling the locally produced wine.
The village is surrounded by vineyards and open countryside and many good walks and picnics can be had in the area. We even have our own Roman ruin - a tumbledown tower perched on top of a hill overlooking the village. The hill is perfect for walks and picnics, and there are stunning views in ever

Out and About
There are two tennis courts in Valros, and horse-riding and a swimming pool are available nearby. The Leisure Park at Bessille offers acres of open countryside, picnic areas, children's play areas, a swimming pool and tennis courts. The magnificent Lac du Salagou provides bathing, wind-surfing, fishing and excellent hilly walks. The Mediterranean beaches are close by, ranging from a 7-mile long stretch of sand at Marseillan Plage to lively, cosmopolitan resorts like Cap d`Agde - where can also be found Europe`s largest naturist resort. The Herault River and thc Canal du Midi offer numerous opportunities for walking, swimming, fishing and boat trips. Pezenas, the nearest town, is about 7 kilometres away. It is a very pretty, lively town, hosting a Festival of Arts and Music every summer from June to September. There are exhibitions and concerts, and many free outdoor performances ranging from clowns to flamenco dancers to classical music. There is an interesting local museum and an easily-followed numbered tour of the town can be made. The town is immensely proud of its connection with Molière, the 17th century dramatist.
In the other direction from Valros is Beziers, 20 minutes' drive away, a city with a turbulent past but now one of the jewels of the Midi. Apart from the extraordinary turreted Cathedral there are numerous sites to visit, art galleries, cinemas, a theatre, and of course dozens of restaurants and bars. In August there is the week-long 'Feria', when the whole of Beziers takes to the streets to celebrate. There is a market and a flower market every Friday, and a monthly antiques market. The house is ideally situated. It is 20 minutes from the Mediterranean, but far enough inland to avoid the crowds of July and August., surrounded by countryside and waterways offering every opportunity for a 'get-away-from-it-all' holiday of peace and relaxation, whilst being within easy driving distance of lively towns and cities offering everything from street markets to classical concerts. You need never leave the village, or you could pack your holiday with endless activities and excursions. The choice is yours!
